At Kingston Primary School we place considerable emphasis on the mental health and well-being of our students and staff. To further develop our capacity in this we have embarked on a journey to become a KidsMatter accredited school. In 2016 we established an action group comprised of staff and parents to drive our initiatives in this area.
KidsMatter Primary is a national collaboration between the health and education sectors. It was developed as a joint initiative by the Principals Australia Institute, beyondblue, and the Australian Psychological Society (APS), with funding from the Australian Government Department of Health and beyondblue. KidsMatter Primary focuses on a mental health and wellbeing framework for primary schools. It is proven to make a positive difference to the lives of Australian children.
KidsMatter Primary provides the tools, methods and support to help schools work with parents and carers, health services and the wider community, to nurture happy, balanced children.
Through KidsMatter Primary, schools undertake a two-to three-year cyclical process in which they plan and take action to be a positive and supportive community; one that is based on respectful relationships, a sense of belonging and inclusion, and that promotes:
- social and emotional learning – including evidence-based social and emotional learning programs
- working authentically with parents, carers and families
- support for students who may be experiencing mental health difficulties.
