Dear Families,

We have started the new term with focused children and settled classrooms.  It’s been wonderful to see our students so happy to be back and engaged in their learning.

TPS Swimming Carnival & Interschool team

Term 4 is always an action-packed term, and the swimming carnival last Thursday was an excellent way to kick-start events for our year 3-6 students.  Congratulations to all who participated in the carnival and a huge thank you to Mrs Kylie Broadbent, class teachers and parent volunteers who ensured the carnival was another outstanding success. Best of luck to the following students who have been selected to participate in the Division A Interschool carnival on Monday, 30 October:

Before School Care

Before School Care with Robin and the Lady Gowrie Team is up and running and a small number of families are already accessing this service. However, with the number of students arriving early and well before supervision / duty of care at school begins, I am expecting that BSC enrolments will increase as the term gets going and families become aware of the program.   If you need care for your child at school before 8.30am, please contact Lady Gowrie: 6230 6864 / The cost of Before School Care is $14 full fee for the session however, most families are eligible for Child Care Benefit which would reduce the cost of this program.  Depending on family income the cost of care would range from $3.00-$14.00 per session (1 Hour 7.30am- 8.30am). Please note that early arrivals are being monitored and families will be contacted where necessary, to discuss before school care arrangements for children who continue to arrive before supervision begins at 8.30am.

NDIS Information Session

Our school is proud to join with the National Disability Insurance Australia in raising awareness about the NDIS and helping our students, and people with disability, their families and carers, and our school community get ready to join the Scheme when it comes into our area.

An information session will be held on Wednesday 15th November at 3.10pm at our school for all interested parents / carers.  Please RSVP by Friday 10th November to or 62278325.

2018 Class Placements

Teachers have started the process of considering class structures and placements for 2018. Our Class Placement Policy is as follows:

  1. Teaching staff will place students in a class group taking into consideration the educational needs of the child, the social & emotional needs of the child, the balance of student abilities within the class group and the balance between boys and girls in each class group.
  2. In the first two weeks of November of each school year, parents will be given the opportunity to make a class placement request for their child for the following year. This should be communicated to the Principal either by letter, email or a formal meeting. A class placement request will only be considered on educational grounds, not individual class teacher preferences.
  3. After teachers have initially placed students in a class group for the following year, the Principal will review class placements in light of any specific parental requests. Not all class placement requests can be met and ultimately the final decision rests with the Principal.
  4. Class placements are announced on the Friday of the second last week of Term 4 and no further changes will be made unless an obvious error has occurred.

Staffing News

This term we welcome Miss Kate Boatwright and Cathy Fountain as our 3P teaching team for the remainder of the year. Miss Boatwright is here on Monday and Tuesdays and Mrs Fountain, Wednesday to Friday.

Ms Nina Penfold very recently announced that she will be formally retiring from her Advanced Skills Teacher position and permanent work with the Department of Education at the end of 2017.  We look forward to celebrating Nina’s many years of service at Taroona, and within the DoE, later in the term.

In addition, Ms Susan Young will transfer to South Hobart Primary School at the start of 2018, after 19 years of dedicated service to the students and families of Taroona.  With Mr Grinham last term announcing his retirement from teaching at the end of 2017, the End of Year Leavers Assembly (Thursday 21 December at 1.30pm) is one not to be missed!

In addition, I am very pleased to announce that Miss Lisa Ker will be transferring to TPS from the start of 2018 as Music Teacher (0.6FTE) and Mrs Kylie Frost will permanently transfer into Taroona as class teacher (0.6FTE) . Many families know Kylie in her role of lead teacher in Taroona’s Launching into Learning Program (Little Wrens) during the past three years. We look forward to welcoming both Lisa and Kylie to our 2018 teaching team.

Staff Professional Learning

This week, Mrs Hilary Purdie launched our Digital Technologies in Schools Grant program with staff involved in an exciting after school session on Tuesday exploring the new curriculum and using digital tools including Little Bits, Bee Bots, Mindstorm Lego and Makey-Makeys to solve real-life problems.

This Friday, all teaching staff will be involved in further professional learning, focusing on Positive Education, Student and Staff Wellbeing as well as Planning for 2018.  Please note that Friday is a student free day and care will be available in the GP Room with Lady Gowrie for those families requiring this service.

Congratulations to Kelsie and Caitlyn at the 50th National Irish Dancing Championships in Adelaide.

They’ve both danced the best they’ve ever danced, with Kelsie’s 4-hand team collecting a medal for 20th in Australia, and both of them getting medals for 6th in the Intermediate Figure Dance (a large-team dance).



Mrs Kylie Broadbent wins gold in the 800!

Wonderful news just in from the NW Coast. Kylie won Gold in the 800m Over 40yrs at the Australian Masters Competition currently being held in NW Tasmania.

Congratulations Kylie. We are very proud of your efforts.

Grade 1-2 Gregson have had an extremely rewarding Term 3. The highlight was our trip to the TMAG where we showed many people how our Rube Goldberg machine worked. We were even on Southern Cross news! We certainly demonstrated the TPS values.



In Term 3, we have been doing abstract art with George’s Mum, Kate McCarthy. Kate McCarthy is an abstract artist, and sells abstract art. If you don’t know what abstract art is, it’s art with a special meaning to you, and it doesn’t have to make sense to anyone else, just something that’s important to you. We had lots of fun working on it, and we produced some amazing pieces of artwork. You can say she puts the ‘art’ in ‘McARThy’. Here are some of the artworks we have made.

4/5 Clark

Grade 4/5 Clark are managing the wonderful ART and CRAFT stall at the Seaside Festival. We have some beautiful handmade crafts already brought in. HOWEVER…. if you are especially crafty or know someone who is, we’d love to have the items you have made.

You are welcome to drop them into school to Mrs Clark, to Marlene Silton or Michelle Catherall, who are collecting the items.

If parents from our class are able to help on the stall, we’d love to hear from you as we still need parents. Please contact Rachelle Douglas ( with regards to this.

School Banking:

The program is great for students to develop saving skills and is also a great fundraiser for our school.  Please click here for the Commonwealth Bank information and Newsletter.

Banking is on Thursdays and bank books are returned to students on Friday (along with Sushi orders).


Uniform Shop News

Term 4 is here, and that means hats are compulsory! Come and get yours from the Uniform Shop.

We are open Tuesdays 2:45 – 3:15 under the staffroom. If you can’t make this time, place an order at the office for collection the following Wednesday morning.

Duty of Care

Please note that students are not to arrive before 8.30am. This is for the students’ protection and safety as there are no teachers on duty prior to 8.30am and classrooms remain locked until this time. Supervision is provided before and after school:

  • Playground (EXCLUDING CREEK PLAYGROUND & OVAL) 8.30am to 8.55am
  • Car park & bus area 2.50pm to 3.05pm
