Dear Families,

Welcome to our first newsletter for 2018! We have had a wonderful start, and our new and returning staff & students have settled in extremely well.

Professional Learning & School Priorities 2018

Our teachers returned to work on 1st February  to participate in Professional Learning focusing on Inquiry and Literacy, led by Kath Murdoch (Teacher, Author and Educational Consultant). Then, on the 5th February all teachers worked together here at school to finalise our 2017 Annual Report and our 2018 School Priorities and Planning.

This year we are focusing on 3 key areas: English- Writing, Digital Technologies, and Inquiry and Play-based learning. You may have noticed a more visible presence of “wondering” across the school in these first few days as we start our journey towards creating a culture of curiosity and inquiry! Our focus in classrooms throughout each newsletter will show evidence of this learning as the year unfolds.

Grounds Update

You may have noticed a few changes taking place across the school site. The Play West Playground redevelopment started on January 8th and is quickly taking shape. The children are enjoying seeing changes in the area each day! We are hoping for a mid-March opening and will provide regular updates as the work gets closer to completion.

Painting has also been underway on the exterior of Top and Middle Block classrooms. This work should be completed within the next fortnight (weather dependent!) and will provide much needed restoration to worn and damaged weather boards.

The footpath outside Early Childhood block as well as the THS bus turning circle was upgraded by the Department of Education over the holiday period. Footpaths in the Kindergarten playground have also been fixed by the school and Sheri Matthews will begin restoring the mural along the ECE wall over the coming weeks.

Finally, the storage area under the Prep deck area is getting closer to completion, which means that we will soon be able to seek donations of items for our loose parts play ground. The Kingborough Lions Club has generously donated $1,000 towards the cost of building the storage space as part of our whole of school focus on inquiry and play-based learning.

2018 Welcome Back BBQ – Friday 23 February from 4.30pm

I look forward to seeing everyone at the Welcome Back BBQ. This is an annual event and provides families with the opportunity to informally visit their child’s classrooms and meet the 2018 teachers as well as connect as a school community in the quadrangle for an hour or two. The TPSA is looking for volunteers to assist so please email Martine Siltman (Chair) if you are able to assist with any aspect of the event ( Classrooms will be open from 4.30 – 5.30pm with teachers then coming out to the quadrangle to informally catch up with families and students.

Levies and Student Assistance

School levies and charges are determined in consultation with the Taroona Primary School Association. The levy for 2018 is inclusive rate of $325 per student Kindergarten-Grade 6. The levy includes all activities, materials, excursions, swimming, Growing Up Program, a personal student device and Online Programs.

The levy also covers the cost of stationery, textbooks, materials, special learning aids, library expenditure, additional classroom supplies and classroom support, ICT programs and individualized learning programs.

Levy payments  can be made by cash, cheque, eftpos, BPay, Bpoint and Service Tas.

It would be appreciated if payment in full could be made within the first four weeks of Term 1.

Our school budgets for the collection of all levies. Any parent who believes that payment of the levy in one lump sum poses a difficulty is invited to make contact with the Principal or School Business Manager to discuss this matter.

Please note that if you intend seeking assistance for your child/children by way of the Government’s Student Assistance Scheme (STAS), application forms are available at the school office; this should be completed and returned as soon as possible. The Student Assistance Scheme now covers ALL student levy costs.

We meet once a month at 7pm in the Staffroom at the School to discuss everything from school staffing, updates on grounds, fundraising and ideas or issues brought to our attention by parents and staff.

2018: Next Meeting to be held on Tuesday 6 March, 2018 at 7pm.

Lady Gowrie Taroona Before and After School Hours Care                       

Lady Gowrie Taroona After School Care operates from the hall each school day from 7.30-8.30am (Before School Care) and 3.00-6.00pm (After School Care) where we cater for children aged 4-12 year olds. We offer a safe and stimulating environment based on the children’s interests incorporating both indoor and outdoor play.  We employ trained Educators and provide a nutritious breakfast and afternoon tea each day.  Please contact the Lady Gowrie Outside School Hours Care Office on 6230 6806 or email us at for more information. To enrol we require families to complete a 2018 enrolment form prior to care commencing.  Child Care Benefit is available to eligible families and all families meeting a work/study requirement are entitled to 50% off all on costs. To ensure the safety of our school property, please ring Crime Stoppers if you see anyone acting suspiciously in our school grounds.



Alex and I are excited to be once again organising Sushi for student lunches on Fridays, this not only gives parents a break from making lunch but students get to try something new and different. All funds raised from the purchase of Sushi rolls goes directly back into the school and towards purchases to benefit students.

When placing an order please write name, class and teacher clearly on an envelope and secure payment within and drop into your class drawer at the office by Tuesday afternoon. Also please don’t use foreign coins for payment as they cannot be banked, we prefer not to take cheques and we ask that coins not be taped together.

We are currently a brainstorming a way to provide a facility to allow families to be able to place orders online and will keep you informed as we bring this to fruition.

Students can again this year place full term orders by placing their orders for the term onto an envelope and placing payment for the term within. If you need to change the order selection just send me an email before that week’s order is placed on Wednesday.

School Banking:

Urgent, Urgent, Urgent!!!       Helpers needed for banking to continue this year.

Banking has always been supported by volunteer parents in the past.  At the end of the year we lost some of our volunteers as their children moved to High School.

What’s involved: Come onsite to Taroona Primary School to sort and process the bank books and enter data. At the most this will take 1 hour a week of your time.

Scholastic Book Club

Scholastic Book Club Issue 1 catalogues have now been sent home with students.  Please place your online order via LOOP or return your cash/cheque order to the office by Feb 26.  If making a cash/cheque order please make sure the student name and class is included on the order form and place it in an envelope with the correct amount.

We are open Tuesdays between 2:45 and 3:15 under the staffroom. If you can’t make this time, place an order at the office for collection the following Wednesday morning.

Duty of Care

Please note that students are not to arrive before 8.30am. This is for the students’ protection and safety as there are no teachers on duty prior to 8.30am and classrooms remain locked until this time. Supervision is provided before and after school:

  • Playground (EXCLUDING CREEK PLAYGROUND & OVAL) 8.30am to 8.55am
  • Car park & bus area 2.50pm to 3.05pm
